Plot[]

After getting caught up in a sea storm, a young man named Gulliver ends up being separated from his father. Gulliver and his dog, Tagg, end up being washed up on shore on an island called Lilliput, which is inhabited by tiny people. He meets the Lilliputians and especially becomes good friends with four of them named Bunko, Eager, Flirtacia (the daughter of Lilliput's king, Pomp), and Glum. Gulliver has to avoid being pursued by a sea captain named John Leach, who is searching for some treasure while Gulliver searches for his own father.

Why Gulliver Isn't Too Big For Lilliput[]

  1. Although it has a typical, realistic art style, the animation is more fluid than several, other H-B works, making it one of the shows animated better by the studio.
  2. As far as the writing, it's somewhat faithful enough to the original story while also bringing its own attributes to the mix at the same time.
  3. Most of the character designs have enough originality to set them apart from other H-B character and characters from other versions of the story.
  4. The characters are mostly fine in one way or another, as well as likable, distinctive, and memorable.
  5. The way the instrumental theme music is set up to go along with the narration in the intro is great, as is the incidental music.
  6. Well-done performances by a voice cast that included the late Don Messick and late Janet Waldo.
  7. The dialogue is properly written.
  8. Plenty of funny moments to keep viewers entertained.
  9. Plenty of action moments to keep one excited as well.
  10. Sometimes there are lessons to be learned in the end.
  11. It spawned some toys in Germany.
  12. This and the literary H-B specials would pave the way for the H-B specials that were a part of the ABC Weekend Specials and CBS Storybreak, acting as a forerunner.

Bad Qualities[]

  1. There are animation goofs, but those are rare.
  2. As good as this Gulliver's design looks and is, it's just a rehash of Samson in his normal form from fellow H-B show, Young Samson, even though it was common for H-B to rehash certain character designs.
  3. Glum is too bland or dull with his doubtfulness, negativity, and pessimism.
  4. There's no explanation as to why the name of Gulliver's dad in this version isn't the same as the dad's from the original.
  5. It never received a proper conclusion on how Gulliver would've finally found his dad.

Trivia[]

  • A second Gulliver's Travels adaptation was made as part of H-B's Famous Classic Tales specials.
