The Adventures of Sam & Max: Freelance Police (Or simply known as Sam & Max: Freelance Police or Sam & Max) is a Canadian/American kids TV show made by Steve Purcell. The show is based on a comic book series with the similar name of Sam & Max made by the same person.
Plot[]
The show details a dog detective, Sam, and his hyperkinetic sidekick lagomorph Max, going on various adventures given by their mysterious boss named "The Commissioner" and with the technical assistance of their basement neighbor "The Geek". This usually leads to them going on bizarre adventures such as the Moon, a jungle and various other places which usually leads into bizarre situations in of itself.
Why It Rocks[]
- The show was extremely ahead of its time as it comes up with very thoughtful, censor-pushing jokes. Most of the jokes are clever and the humor can be enjoyed by both younger and older audiences.
- The cartoon violence on display is thrilling and comedic.
- Well done voice-acting from the main cast, with Sam's voice actor Harvey Atkin (the voice of King Koopa) being a good example.
- All of the characters are very likable, with a memorable cast of supporting characters and villains. Max is a very humorous character, with a psychopathic personality, but is clever. He would even go on to be the "breakout character", experiencing immense popularity. Lorne is another good example, as he is depicted as a fanboy of the protagonists, much to their annoyance.
- Unique art-style and animation. The world was designed to be a parody of American culture and it largely succeeds.
- Very memorable episodes, such as "A Glitch In Time", where the protagonists mess around with time travel and "That Darn Gator", where they keep a pet alligator.
- Sam and Max work off of each other for good comedy. Sam is the relative straight man to Max's utter insanity.
- One episode of the series tackles moral guardians in a hilarious way, and holds up especially well in an age where both extremes of the political spectrum crusade against media that goes against their values.
Bad Qualities[]
- The show got cancelled for unknown reasons, after only one season of 24 segments.
- Although it's very rare, there is some toilet humor.
- Despite being a kid's cartoon, most of the jokes will go over the heads of younger audiences.
Trivia[]
- It won the 1998 Gemini Award for "Best Animated Series".
- When the show was first released on the web, the episode "Fools Die On Friday" was left out, possibly due to a resemblance to the September 11 terrorist attacks.
